How to read a multiplication chart
A multiplication chart, also called a multiplication table or times table chart, is a grid that shows the answer to every multiplication problem in one place. The numbers you multiply sit along the top and down the left side. The answers fill the middle.
Once you know the trick, finding an answer takes about two seconds.
- Find the first numberLook down the blue column on the left. For 7 × 8, stop at 7.
- Find the second numberLook along the blue row on top and stop at 8.
- Follow both linesSlide across from 7 and down from 8. The square where they meet is your answer: 56.

Patterns hiding in the chart
The chart is more than a cheat sheet. It is full of patterns, and kids who spot them have far less to memorize. Use the pattern buttons next to the chart to see each one light up.
You only need half of it
3 × 7 and 7 × 3 give the same answer. That means the chart is a mirror image of itself along the diagonal. Learn one half and you get the other half for free. Out of 144 facts only 78 are truly different.
Square numbers run down the middle
1, 4, 9, 16, 25 and so on. These are the numbers you get when you multiply a number by itself, and they form a neat diagonal line from the top left to the bottom right.
The 9s always add up to 9
18, 27, 36, 45. Add the two digits of any answer in the 9 times table up to 9 × 10 and you get 9 again. The tens go up by one while the ones go down by one.
The 5s and 10s are the easy ones
Everything in the 10 times table ends in 0. Everything in the 5 times table ends in 5 or 0. These two rows are a great place to start.
Most answers are even
An answer is only odd when both numbers you multiply are odd. That is why three quarters of the chart is even.

Which chart for which grade?
Every school is a little different, but this is the usual path in the United States.
Skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. The 1-10 chart is plenty.
The big year. Students learn all facts up to 10 × 10 and start on the 11s and 12s.
Fluency with the full 1-12 chart, used for long multiplication, division and fractions.
Five tips for learning the times tables
Start easy. Begin with the 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. Then the 3s, 4s and 9s. Save the 6s, 7s and 8s for last. By then most of their answers are already known from the other tables.
Keep it short. Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Little and often is what makes facts stick.
Use the chart, then hide it. Look answers up freely at first. After a week or two, switch the chart above to Fill in and see how far you get without help.
Say it out loud. "Six times seven is forty two." Hearing the fact helps as much as seeing it.
Make it a game. Hit the Quiz button and try to beat your best streak. Every right answer fills a square, and a full chart is a great feeling.

What is a multiplication chart?

Why does this chart go to 12 and not 10?
A 10 by 10 chart covers the basics, but most schools in the US and the UK teach the tables up to 12. Dozens, inches in a foot and hours on a clock all use 12, so the extra two tables earn their place. Prefer the smaller one? Use the 1-10 chart.
How do I print the multiplication chart?
Press Print chart next to the chart and your browser will print a clean black and white version on one page. You can also download a PDF from the printable charts page. Print blank gives you an empty chart to fill in by hand.
Can I save the chart as a PDF?
Yes. Use the Download PDF button, or press Print chart and choose Save as PDF as the printer.
Is there a multiplication chart from 1 to 1000?
Not as a single chart. A 1-1000 chart would hold one million answers and would need thousands of sheets of paper. The largest chart that is still practical is the 1-100 chart with 10,000 answers. For anything bigger, a calculator is the right tool.
Can I show the chart on a smartboard?
